John Holmes Stedwell was born in the Parish of Cripplegate, London, and was brought up as a printer by trade. He enlisted for unlimited service into the 4th Light Dragoons in London on 2 April 1825, aged 18, and served with that regiment in the East Indies, Scinde and Afghanistan for 16 years. He was discharged at Fort Pitt on 10 May 1842, in consequence of ‘severe dysentery first apparent while in service in Lower Scinde in 1839 caused by exposure to cold and fatigue rendering him unable to perform any further duties.’ Stedwell was admitted to Chelsea Hospital as an in-pensioner on 1 August 1872, and died there on 14 March 1885. Sold with copy discharge papers.
