Clipping of English coin was extensively practised in Ireland in the mid-15th century and statutes were passed in 1447 and 1456 to restrict its circulation. Contemporary forgeries were modelled on these clipped-down coins and one or both are referred to in contemporary documents as O’Reilly’s Money.
