Thomas Crook was born in 1792 at Upper Letcombe, near Wantage, Berkshire. Enlisting into the Army in 1808, he served with the 1st Dragoons in the Peninsula War, being present at the battles of Vittoria and Toulouse. He served in Captain Phipp’s No. 5 or ‘F’ Troop, 1st Royal Dragoons, in the Waterloo Campaign. Crook was discharged in August 1834 at Brighton and died on 19 December 1869. The recipient’s M.G.S. 2 clasp medal is held in the Household Cavalry Regimental Museum.
