John Steele was born in North Berwick, Scotland in 1884. A miner by occupation, he attested for service in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on 15 March 1916. Serving as a Gunner with the 1st Division Ammunition Column, Canadian Field Artillery, he was killed in action on 28 June 1916. He was buried in the Railway Dugouts Burial Ground, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium
