Edmund Wintle was born on 13 November 1800 at Jessore, the son of James Wintle, a Senior Judge of the Court of Appeal and Circuit, Calcutta. Edmund was educated at the Rev. F. Blick’s School, Tamworth, Staffordshire and at St. John’s College, Cambridge. He was nominated for a Cadetship by John Bebb, a director of the East India Company and was appointed an Ensign with the 21st Bengal N.I. in 1819. Promoted Lieutenant in 1825, he was appointed to act as Interpreter and Quartermaster to the 71st N.I. in 1829. Promoted Captain in 1834, he was appointed to officiate as a Major of a Brigade in 1838 and was appointed Fort Adjutant of Fort William and Superintendent of Gentlemen Cadets in 1844. In June 1844 he was appointed 2nd Assistant Secretary to the Military Board. Promoted Major in July 1846, he served in the Second Sikh War, at Jullunder Doab, with the force under Brigadier Wheeler. Promoted Lieutenant-Colonel of the 8th N.I. in 1852, he received the Brevet of Colonel in January 1856 whilst serving with the 29th N.I. Wintle retired with the honorary rank of Major-General in December 1861 and died in Bath on 8 April 1881. Sold with copied research.
