James Bailey was born near Salisbury, Wiltshire and enlisted in the 17th Regiment in January 1855, aged 19 years. In his subsequent career of 20 years with the Colours, his overseas postings included the Crimea, Halifax, Nova Scotia and Jamaica, and he was discharged at Curragh in December 1875.

John Bird was born at Lowick, Northamptonshire and enlisted in the 17th Regiment in June 1858, aged 20 years. In his subsequent career of 21 years with the Colours, his overseas postings included North America and the West Indies but he does not appear to have seen any active service prior to his discharge at Shorncliffe in June 1879.
