Charles Kirwan was born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire and enlisted in the Leicestershire Regiment in July 1894, aged 20 years. He subsequently witnessed active service out in South Africa, being employed in the Mounted Infantry from October 1899 until June 1902. He was placed on the Army Reserve in November of the latter year and was finally discharged in July 1906.
