Thomas Hughes was born in Warwick and enlisted in the Leicestershire Regiment direct from the Militia in June 1894, aged 18 years. In his subsequent career of 16 years with the Colours, his only service overseas was in South Africa from 1896 until October 1902, his service record confirming his entitlement to the Queen’s and King’s South Africa Medals with the above described clasps. Hughes was transferred to the Army Reserve at the end of 1902, discharged in June 1910 and found employment as a printer’s handyman. He died at Northampton in February 1950.
