Charles Stockman was born in 1798 and was an extremely successful hairdresser, perfumer, and purveyor of related luxury goods. He was in business in Bath for 45 years, and lists himself in the 1861 census as a ‘Gentleman’, despite not having been born as one. On his death in 1865, his probate lists a veritable fortune of £4000.
