Auction Catalogue
15th century, lead pilgrim’s flask, 51mm x 39mm, scallop shell shape and design on the front and hatched crescent on the reverse; scratched over this appears to be a phallic symbol. Very fine but handles missing £60-£80
The scallop shell is associated with the shrine of St James at Santiago de Compostela in Spain, which has been one of the most popular pilgrimages since the 9th century.
