Obsequies for James Watt, 1819, a copper medal, unsigned, seated figure of Watt, reverse arms in garter, 46mm (BHM 984; E 1116); together with Centenary of the Blue Coat Charity School, Birmingham, 1824, a copper medal by J. Ottley, 48mm (Taylor 57a; D & W 33) [2]. About extremely fine and better (£40-50)

James Watt (1736-1819), the universally known scientist and engineer, generally regarded as the father of the steam engine, was buried at Handsworth, 2 September 1819.

The Blue Coat Charity School, St Philip’s Churchyard, Birmingham, erected in 1724 and rebuilt in 1794, was demolished in 1935 when the School removed to Harbourne
