Miscellaneous, The Mint, Birmingham: Checks (2), in copper and nickel, arms of Birmingham, the mint birmingham around, six-pointed star punctuation, rev. ralph heaton & sons coiners around to the english and foreign governments, six-pointed star punctuation, edges plain, both 25mm, 5.49g/12h, 6.34g/12h (Sweeny 19, 20; Hawkins p.278; cf. BDW 6, 1012; cf. Noble II, 1157) [2]. First good very fine, second about very fine and with rim nicks (£15-25)

The size of the then Imperial halfpenny, these pieces were struck at Heaton’s Icknield street works some time after 1864, when the firm began to style itself in advertisements as being coiners to English and foreign governments
