Charles Rose was born in London in 1892 and having attested for the Manchester Regiment served with the 2nd Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 15 August 1914. He was reported missing and wounded by 26 August 1914, and was later confirmed as having been taken Prisoner of War at Le Cateau on 26 August 1914, being imprisoned at Munster II Prisoner of War camp. He was repatriated in December 1918, and discharged in February 1919, ‘no longer physically fit for active service’, and was awarded a Silver War Badge No. B126635. He was subsequently employed by the Post Office as a Sorter in the London Postal Region, and was awarded the Imperial Service Medal upon his retirement (London Gazette: 27 January 1953).
