George John Norman was born in Ipswich, Suffolk. A blacksmith by trade, he attested for the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Suffolk Regiment at the city of his birth in January 1900. Norman served with the Battalion in South Africa between February and October 1900, and was discharged on 1 January 1901.
