Brig.-Gen. David Erskine Dewar, late R.A. died on September 7th [1928], at the home of his sister, Mrs H. S. Colt, East Hendred, Berks. Born on September 25th, 1853, he was the grandson of Sir James Dewar, Chief Justice of Bombay, and son of the Rev. David Erskine Dewar, B.C.L., Fellow of New College, Oxford. General Dewar was gazetted in the Royal Artillery in February, 1874, and six years later was engaged in the Afghan War. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in April, 1883, and in the following year took part in operations of the Zaila Field Force. He reached the rank of Lieut.-Colonel in January 1905. During the Great War in 1915 he served as an A.A.G., and in August, 1917, received the honorary rank of Brigadier-General.’
