Horace Victor Chignall was a native of Winchester, Hampshire. He served during the Great War with the 1/1st Hampshire Yeomanry on the Western Front, and was serving with it when it amalgamated with the 15th (Service) Battalion, Hampshire Regiment to form the 15th (Hampshire Yeomanry) Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. Chignall was wounded in action (entitled to Silver War Badge), and was discharged in March 1919. At the time of the 1937 Coronation, he was employed as Examining Officer H.M. Customs, Kenya.
