Thomas Robert Cowan was born on 12 May 1918 and attested for the Royal Army Ordnance corps at Tynemouth on 8 June 1937. He served during the Second World War in Malta, and was advanced Staff-Sergeant on 24 June 1944. He subsequently transferred to the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.
