Frederick Lionel Crompton was born on 23 February 1888 and attested for the 25th (Cyclist) Battalion, London Regiment, on 11 December 1915. He served with the 7th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 24 October 1916, and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Royal Fusiliers on 29 May 1917. He was promoted Lieutenant on 30 November 1918, and relinquished his commission on 12 July 1919.
