Arthur Henry Lewin was born in Deptford in 1887 and attested for the Middlesex Regiment on 24 October 1905 seeing pre-war service in India and at Home before Great War service on the Western Front from 5 September 1914 where he received gun shot wounds to his shoulder, arm and back. Returning to the U.K. on 1 November 1914, he then served at home, transferring to the Suffolk Regiment for service as a Drummer on 13 April 1916.

Discharged on 1 January 1919, he was awarded a weekly pension of 10/- and a Silver War Badge no. 106734.
