James William Smith, a labourer from Consett, Co. Durham, was born on 28 August 1894. He attested for the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on 10 September 1914, and saw service in the Great War entering the Dardanelles theatre on 7 May 1915. He received a compound fracture to his right foot during the Second Battle of Krithia on 6 May 1915. Evacuated to the Royal Naval Hospital at Malta on 31 May 1915, he was invalided from the service on 21 June 1915.
