Robert Smith attested for the South African Miscellaneous Trades Company on 14 June 1917, and was promoted Corporal on 5 July 1917. He served during the Great War on the Western Front from 15 October 1917, and was awarded four blue overseas service chevrons. He was discharged on 15 February 1919.
