John Arthur Cunningham was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, in 1882 and attested for the Hampshire Regiment at Portsmouth on 6 February 1901, having previously served in the Regiment’s 3rd Volunteer Battalion. He served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War from 16 March 1901 to 13 May 1902, and was injured in a railway accident at Barberston on 30 March 1902. He was discharged on 12 June 1902, after 1 years and 127 days’ service.
