Alfred W. Swatton, a native of Fareham, Hampshire, attested for the Hampshire (Fortress) Royal Engineers Volunteers, and served with the 2nd Contingent in South Africa during the Boer War from 25 March 1901 to 9 July 1902. Advanced Sergeant, he was awarded his Territorial Force Efficiency Medal per Army Order 205 of 1 July 1912.

Swatton saw further service during the the Great War with the 1st/7th (Hampshire) Field Company, R.E., initially on the Western Front from 20 October 1915. Proceeding to Salonika, he died of wounds there on 2 October 1916, and is buried in Struma Military Cemetery, Greece.
