William Gerald Gahan was born in 20 April 1900 and was first commissioned on 16 July 1919, and transferred to the Indian Establishment, 1 Gurkha Rifles, on 30 November 1919. He was promoted to Major on 16 July 1937; acting Lieutenant-Colonel, to 4 May 1943; temporary Lieutenant-Colonel, 5 May 1943 to 15 February 1944, and 11 April to 21 September, 1944.
