Robert Henry James Horne was born in Bermondsey, London, on 25 June 1877 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class on 9 October 1893. Advanced Acting Chief Petty Officer on 1 October 1915, he served during the Great War in a variety of ships and shore based establishments, and was confirmed in that rate on 1 October 1916. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 12 February 1918, and was shore demobilised on 7 March 1919.
