An interesting Georgian mameluke hilted sword, circa 1810, the flat deeply curved blade back-edged at the point, with remains of a koftghari cartouche filled with arabic script, brass hilt, pommel in the form of a horse head, the flowing mane forming the back-strap, the cross guard quillions terminating in hooves, the langets engraved with borders of acanthus leaves and the ecusson applied with a crescent, replacement horn grip, complete with it’s solid brass scabbard with two loose suspension rings, the langet fitting engraved with owners initials JBT in script, minor wear overall, scabbard liner absent and grip replaced as stated, otherwise good condition £800-1200

Attributed by vendor to James Bates Terrell, Bengal Native Infantry, born 1792, Cadet 1806, arrived in India 1808, and a Lieutenant by 1813. He was killed in action at Makwanpoor in February 1816, during the Nepaul War.
