London Gazette 26 May 1916. ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He left the trench under heavy fire and suceeded in recovering a pack horse which was in danger of being lost. Later, he went out again under fire and brought in ammunition boxes off dead gun horses.’
