Bostock Esq. 9th Lancers) officially impressed in the usual style, additionally engraved on either side of the impressed naming ‘2d Cavalry Brigade’ and ‘Aid de Camp’; New Zealand 1845-66, reverse undated (Captn. J. W. Bostock, 1st Bn. 16 Foot) contact marks and edge bruising, otherwise better than good fine, the first extremely rare and possibly unique (2) £700-900

James William Bostock was born in 1826 and, prior to joining the Army, served with the 9th Lancers at the battle of Sobraon, 10 February 1846, as Acting Aide-de-Camp to Brigadier Campbell, 9th Lancers, Commanding the 2nd Cavalry Brigade (Medal). He was first gazetted as an Ensign, by purchase, in the 29th Foot on 1 May 1846, and transferred as Lieutenant, by purchase, to the 16th Foot on 20 October 1848, becoming Captain, again by purchase, on 4 August 1854. He subsequently served on the Staff in New Zealand (Medal) and was promoted to Major on 17 April 1866. He commanded the 16th Foot 1872-74, and was promoted to Colonel on 10 October 1879, retiring with the honorary rank of Major-General on the same date. He died at his home in Taunton, Somerset, on 14 February 1901, aged 75.
