Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.V.R., 1st issue (197172 W. J. Arnold, Ldg. Sean., H.M.S. Adamant) good very fine £100-120

William James Arnold, who came from Sandown on the Isle of Wight, died in H.M. submarine E5 on 11 March 1916. The exact fate of this submarine remains unknown, but it is likely she fell victim to a mine while patrolling in Heligoland Bight, or, alternatively, to one of the increasing number of enemy ships sent to patrol the area. Arnold, who ‘had taken part in some excellent work since the war began’, left a widow.
