John Grady was born in Co. Clare and enlisted in the 3rd Light Dragoons in June 1832, aged 14 years. Appointed a Trumpeter in March 1837, he witnessed active service in Afghanistan in 1842, in addition to being present at the battles represented by his Sutlej and Punjab Medals, his service record noting that he was slightly wounded at Sobraon on 10 February 1846. Grady was advanced to Trumpet-Major in May 1849 and to Kettle Drummer in March 1855, but was reduced to Private in May of the latter year and was discharged in the same rank in June 1858.
