William Andrews, who was born at the Cape of Good Hope, enlisted in the 10th Hussars at Meerut in February 1823, aged 14 years. He subsequently served in the East Indies for over 15 years and was present at the Bhurtpoor operations, winning entitlement to the Army of India Medal with appropriate clasp. Having been appointed a Trumpeter after seven years as a Private, he was eventually discharged as a Trumpet-Major in September 1851, the Board finding that ‘his conduct had been exemplary and that the Silver Medal for Long Service & Good Conduct had been apllied for’. Andrews, who gave his intended place of residence as Lichfield, Staffordshire, died at Derby in April 1872.
