Charles Alfred Marcham was born at Shepherd’s Bush, London and enlisted in the 7th Hussars in April 1896, aged 14 years. Appointed a Trumpeter in September 1899, he served out in South Africa from November 1901 to December 1905, winning entitlement to the above described Medal and clasps. Marcham was appointed a Bandsman in April 1906 but transferred to the Royal Artillery in March 1908, and passed instruction for 1st Class Gunner and Gunlayer in early August 1914, the day before the outbreak of hostilities. But he did not go to France until February 1918, in the interim serving as a Bandsman in the Royal Artillery Mounted Band, from which unit he was finally discharged in May 1919. In addition to his entitlement to the British War and Victory Medals, Marcham was also the recipient of the Army L.S. & G.C. Medal.
