Thomas Doyle was born in Coventry and enlisted in the 9th Lancers in December 1849. Embarked for India in July 1851, he was appointed a Trumpeter in December 1853 and went on to witness active service in the Indian Mutiny in the same rank, including the siege and capture of Delhi, the relief of Lucknow and the subsequent operations at the latter place. He was discharged in Dublin in December 1864.
