John George Gundry was born at Gosport, Hampshire in September 1859 and entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer in March 1882. He subsequently served aboard H.M.S. Minotaur in the Egypt operations of the same year, and in the Bacchante in the Irrawaddy Flotilla during the Burma operations of 1885-87. Awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in March 1892, Gundry was appointed an Artificer Engineer (Warrant Officer) in March 1898 and commissioned as a Chief Artificer Engineer in April 1903. He was subsequently, too, one of the first to be appointed to another newly created rank, that of Engineer Lieutenant, in the following year, and ended his career after a posting to Australia. Recalled in August 1914, he went on to add a single British War Medal 1914-20 to his Honours and Awards for service as an Assistant for Pembroke, from which establishment he was responsible for overseeing the production of gun-mountings at Woolwich.
