Sold with copy of m.i.c. and nine pages from his National Archives correspondence file. The following is extracted from a letter written to the War Office by the recipient from the Russian Hospital, South Audley Street, London, dated 16 July 1917: ‘On the 7th of June, whilst in command of a Company of the above Battalion [9th Loyal North Lancs.] in the Messines attack, I received a wound from shrapnel in my left knee. I was operated on at the 20th General Hospital in France on the 11th of June, and the shrapnel which had penetrated the bone was removed...’
