Augustus Nicholls Thompson was born on 3 November 1823, and entered the Bengal Army in 1839. Posted to the 36th Native Infantry in August 1840, he fought with his regiment during the first Sikh war and was present with it at the battle of Aliwal (Medal). In February 1847 he was appointed Officiating Interpreter and Quarter-Master of the corps, and in the following year accompanied the regiment to Lahore and, in due course, into the fieldin the Army of the Punjab. Thereafter he served with it in the Punjab Campaign of 1848-49, taking part in the affair of Ramnagar, the passage of the Chenab, the action of Sadulapur, and the battle of Chilianwala, in the last of which he received a mortal wound, from the effects of which he died in camp on the day after the engagement, 14 January 1849. He was buried in the cemetery at Lahore, and commemorated by a tablet in St Luke’s Church at Jullundur, and by name on the monument erected on the battlefield at Chilianwala.
