Pair: Captain T. L. Metcalf, late 79th Highlanders

Military General Service 1793-1814, 1 clasp, Egypt (T. L. Metcalf, Lieut. 79th Foot); Sultan’s Medal for Egypt 1801, 3rd Class, gold, 43mm, with original hook and chain suspension, nearly extremely fine (2) £3000-3500

Thomas Levet Metcalf was appointed as Ensign in the 79th Highlanders on 5 August 1799, becoming Lieutenant in May 1800. He served with the 79th in the expedition to Ferrol in 1800, and in the Egyptian campaign of 1801, being present at the battles of Mandora and Alexandria (Silver medal for Egypt and Gold Medal from Sultan Selim III). Promoted to Captain in April 1805, he was appointed to the 6th Royal Veteran Battalion in April 1813. This establishment was reduced in July 1814, and Metcalf was placed on the Retired List as Major (Unattached) on 28 November 1814. Major Thomas Metcalf died on 8 December 1859.
