Alfred Young was born on 17 March 1898 and enlisted into the Durham Light Infantry as a band boy in 1913. For his participation in the Great War he gained the British War and Victory Medals. He attended a bandmaster’s class at Kneller Hall in 1925 and was appointed Bandmaster (Warrant Officer Class 1) of the 2nd Battalion Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry the following year. In 1938 he took over the band of the Royal Army Service Corps. In 1944 Young was promoted Lieutenant and appointed Director of Music, Royal Engineers. He went to Palestine in 1945, was promoted Captain in July 1946 and returned to the U.K. in 1949. He was promoted Major in 1950 and continued in the Royal Engineers until his retirement in 1958. Circa 1968 he was appointed Professor of Instrumentation at Kneller Hall.
