James McCaffery was born in Glasgow on 1 October 1892 and entered the Royal Navy as a Probationary Sick Berth Assistant on 11 July 1911, attaining the rank of 2nd Sick Berth Steward on 22 May 1916. During the war he served aboard H.M.Ships Seagull andVivid I and at Plymouth Hospital. His was discharged on 17 March 1920 due to tuberculosis.

William Scott was born in Islington, London on 31 October 1892. A Clerk by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as a Probationary Sick Berth Attendant on 19 February 1912, becoming a Sick Berth Attendant on 16 December 1912. During 1914-16 he served aboard the battlecruiser
Lion. The Lion, flagship of Admiral Sir David Beatty’s battlecruiser squadrons was heavily involved in the battles of Heligoland Bight, Dogger Bank and Jutland and took heavy damage in the latter two actions. Scott was then based in Devonport from December 1916 until 3 January 1917 when he was discharged due to tuberculosis. Both sold with copied service papers.
