Arthur Graves Spratt entered the Army as a Lieutenant in June 1875 and attained the rank of Major in November 1892. He served in the campaign on the North West Frontier of India under Sir William Lockhart in 1897-98, with the Tirah Expeditionary Force with the 1st Battalion Devonshire Regiment, and was present at the capture of Sampagha and Arhanga Passes. He later served with the regiment in the South African War.
