Charles Roberts was born in Lambeth, London and enlisted in the 9th Lancers at Brentford in February 1841, aged 19 years. He was subsequently present at the battle of Punniar in the Gwalior Campaign, Sobraon in the First Sikh War, and at the crossing of the Chenab and the battles of Chilianwala and Goojerat in the Punjab 1848-49. He was discharged back at Chatham in July 1857.
