Sir Augustus Henry Glossop Harris (1852-96), actor, impresario and dramatist, a previous manager of the Royalty Theatre near the Tower of London, took over the lease of the Theatre Royal in 1879. In 1892 he added the Royal English Opera House to his portfolio. He died of diabetes in Brighton in June 1896. Butlin’s holiday camps remained closed during World War II
