Alfred Victor Ind was born in Bristol on 5 December 1899 and enlisted there in the Royal Marine Artillery on 18 April 1917. He served during the Great War as a Gunner aboard H.M.S. Dreadnought from 22 March to 6 August 1918, and later in the War aboard H.M.S. New Zealand. He was demobilised on 8 April 1920, and subsequently joined the Bristol City Police.
