Robert Catley attested for the Hampshire Regiment and served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 23 August 1914. Awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, he was subsequently commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force on 22 February 1919.
