William Stiff was born in Worcester and attested for the Honourable East India Company’s Service on 10 April 1849. He served with the 1st Bengal Fusiliers in India during the Great Sepoy Mutiny, and subsequently as a Drummer with the 101st Regiment of Foot (as the 1st Bengal Fusiliers had become) during the Umbeyla campaign. He was discharged in May 1869, after 20 years and 1 month’s service.
