John McArthur was born in Dalgety, Fife in February 1889. He enlisted in the Royal Naval Air Service in May 1916, and after serving at Crystal Palace was posted to Dunkirk in February 1917. McArthur advanced to Petty Officer Mechanic, and served with 202 Squadron. He transferred as Sergeant Mechanic to the Royal Air Force in April 1918, and was discharged in March 1919.
