Provenance: Buckland Dix & Wood, December 1994.

David Ewart was born in Camberwell, Surrey, in 1803 and entered the Bengal Army in 1819. Promoted to Lieutenant in December 1820, he served at Bhurtpoor with the 2nd Troop, 1st Brigade, Horse Artillery. Acting Adjutant 1st Brigade H.A. 14 June 1828, and 15 April 1829. Officiating Commissary of Ordnance at Cawnpore, September 1835 till March 1837. Commanded 4th Troop 2nd Brigade H.A. from March 1837 till 1844, and commanding Artillery at Ludhiana from January 1842. Lieutenant-Colonel commanding 3rd Battalion Foot Artillery, and afterwards commanded 9th Battalion. Ewart retired in May 1849, was promoted to Hon. Colonel in November 1854 and died at his home in Dumfries on 26 August 1880.
