Joseph Gwilliam was born at Droitwich, Worcester, and attested for the 3rd Dragoon Guards at Birmingham on 12 June 1900, having previously served in the 5th Volunteer Battalion, Worcester Regiment. He served in the South Africa during the Boer War from 29 May 1901 to 2 June 1903, and was discharged for ‘misconduct’ on 24 April 1905.
