Hugh Miller was born at Dumbarton and enlisted in the Imperial Yeomanry at Glasgow on 1 March 1891, declaring prior service in the Scots Greys (time expired). He served with the 18th (Lanarkshire) Company, 6th Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War from 12 March to 4 December 1901, and was discharged from the 1st Provisional Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry, having been found unfit for further military service, on 5 February 1902.
