Charles Cooper was born on 8 May 1893, and was a resident of Bacup, Lancashire. He attested for the East Lancashire Regiment and served in ‘D’ Company, 1st Battalion, during the Great War on the Western Front from 22 August 1914. He was captured and taken prisoner of war at Oppy Wood, near Arras, during the British Spring Offensive in April 1917, and was initially held at Douai Camp. At the time of his capture he was recorded as having wounds to his head and nose.
